Need to transfer an out-of-state vehicle title to Maryland? Nexa Tag and Title helps eligible new residents and vehicle buyers prepare and process Maryland title and registration transactions at our Greenbelt office.

The Maryland MVA requires new Maryland residents to title and register their vehicles within 60 days of moving to the state. Missing that deadline may affect credit for titling tax paid to another state and may result in a citation for out-of-state registration. Vehicles purchased from an out-of-state dealer or private seller may also require additional documents.

What to bring

• A valid Maryland driver’s license or acceptable proof of a Maryland residential address

• The original out-of-state title and current registration card

• A completed Maryland Certificate of Title Application (VR-005), when required

• Proof of Maryland vehicle insurance

• A Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate, if required

• The bill of sale, purchase agreement, and odometer disclosure, if applicable

• Lien-release documents, or the lienholder’s account, mailing, and contact information if the title is held by a lender

• Payment for MVA taxes and fees and applicable tag-and-title service charges

How the transfer works

1. Bring the original title and supporting documents to our Greenbelt office.

2. We review ownership, insurance, inspection, purchase, and lien information.

3. We help process an eligible Maryland title and registration transaction and explain the next steps.

Maryland requirements vary for vehicles owned before moving, vehicles purchased out of state, leased vehicles, titled vehicles with active liens, and vehicles from jurisdictions that do not issue titles. Incomplete, altered, or improperly assigned ownership documents can delay or prevent processing.

This service is for transferring a U.S. state title into Maryland. Vehicles imported from outside the United States may require federal customs, safety, emissions, translation, or compliance documents. Nonresidents temporarily keeping a vehicle in Maryland may need a different permit rather than a Maryland title transfer.

Call Nexa Tag and Title at (301) 747-3600 before visiting if a lender holds the title, the seller made an error, the vehicle came from a non-title state, or the vehicle was imported. We serve Greenbelt, College Park, Hyattsville, Lanham, Beltsville, and nearby Prince George’s County communities.
