Tag Transfer | Transferencia de placas

Need to transfer Maryland license plates to another vehicle? Nexa Tag and Title helps customers complete eligible Maryland tag transfers at our Greenbelt office.
According to Maryland MVA guidance, you may keep your plates when transferring them to another vehicle you own. Standard plate transfers are generally allowed among eligible Class A passenger vehicles, Class E trucks, and Class M multipurpose vehicles. Eligibility depends on the vehicles, ownership, registration term, and other transaction details.
What to bring
• A valid government-issued photo ID
• Your current Maryland license plates and registration card
• The title or ownership documents for the vehicle receiving the plates
• Proof of Maryland insurance for the receiving vehicle
• Any bill of sale, trade-in, lien, or related ownership documents that apply
How a Maryland tag transfer works
1. Bring your plates and vehicle documents to our Greenbelt office.
2. We review the ownership, vehicle classes, registration, and supporting documents.
3. We help process the eligible transfer and explain what to keep for your records.
The Maryland MVA currently lists a $15 plate-transfer fee, plus any difference between the registration fees for the vehicles. If fewer than 12 months remain on the existing registration, an additional registration year and fee may be required. Taxes, title charges, registration charges, and tag-and-title service fees may also apply. Fees and requirements can change, so we will review your specific transaction.
